Decks. They’re a place for entertainment, for friends and family. They’re a place to escape and somewhere to snuggle up on a cold wintery day. You can even add a pergola to escape the hot summer sun or provide some shelter from the elements. Here at Habitat Build Co. we specialise in creating decks and pergolas and have many years of experience behind us to provide you with your best decking design and pergola options and turn your ideas into a reality with your budget and vision in mind.

With any build it can be difficult to know where to begin. In todays blog we plan to show you everything you need to consider when planning to build your deck.

Let us start with why we dream of a deck in the first place. Is it for entertaining the family and friends on weekends or somewhere for you to find some solace and get away from it all? Or maybe it’s for a more practical reason. For example, you have an unusable back or front yard which is sloping or dangerous for young children. In any case, whatever it is that you want to create we might be able to help you out.

Things to consider when creating your deck

- Finding a good carpenter or builder. It goes without saying that we at Habitat Build Co. we believe that we are the one of the Illawarra and Sutherland Shire’s leading carpentry and building services because we put the customers vision, budget and satisfaction first. We work with our customers from the early planning stages right through to final completion all the while trying to minimise stress.

-       Budget. Have a rough idea of how much money you are willing to spend on the project. A good carpenter or builder will keep this in mind and work with you to provide you with the right options for your budget requirements. Keep in mind that the final product may be a little over or under your budget but it should be somewhere in the ballpark figure.

-       Size of your deck. You must check with local council for maximum size before construction goes ahead plans may need to be submitted.

-       Consider the area you would like the deck to be built. Some factors to include in decision-making process include:

1.     How high above the ground is the deck going to be built?

2.    Access to the area from the street

3.    Square metre decking you would like to cover

4.    Is there a need or want for stair access from the deck?

5.    Storage under or on deck

6.    Do I have room for a pergola over my decking?

7. What type of balustrading do I want around my deck?

-       Finish materials. Decking species including width and size.

-       How will you use the space? E.g. BBQ, sun tanning, shoe rack, dinner table.

-       Is there a need for privacy screens?

-       Gas point for the BBQ.

-       Lighting design.

These are just some of the many considerations when you are thinking about creating, planning and building a deck.
